Kathak Kadam Brings the Art of Kathak to Kansas City
There is something special about seeing Indian classical arts continue to grow and find a home within our Kansas City community.
KCdesi is delighted to welcome Kathak Kadam as our newest Premium Partner.
Based in Overland Park and founded by Surekha Nurusimhadevara, Kathak Kadam is dedicated to teaching Kathak with an emphasis on strong foundations, individual growth and a genuine understanding of the art form.
For students, that means learning much more than choreography.
Kathak Kadam’s curriculum introduces students to the fundamental elements of Kathak, including tatkar, chakkars, hastaks, taal, padhant, abhinaya, rhythm and musicality, along with the theory and understanding that give those movements meaning.
Learning Kathak One Step at a Time
The name Kathak Kadam feels especially appropriate: kadam means a step, and learning an Indian classical art form is very much a journey taken one step at a time.
One aspect of Kathak Kadam that particularly stands out is its emphasis on learning before performing.
Students are encouraged to develop strong fundamentals, understand what they are learning and progress at a pace appropriate for them. Small class sizes allow for individual attention, corrections and guidance as students develop their technique and confidence.
As students progress through their Kathak training and reach the appropriate level of readiness, Kathak Kadam can also organize a Rangmanch Pravesh (similar to an Arangetram in Bharatanatyam), a special milestone performance celebrating the student’s training and journey in Kathak. The event may be arranged based on the interest of the student and parents.
That philosophy can be especially meaningful for families looking for Kathak classes in the Kansas City area where students can develop both technical skills and an appreciation for the tradition behind the dance.
The Journey Behind Kathak Kadam
Kathak Kadam also grew from a very personal connection to dance.
Surekha’s interest in dance began early in life and eventually led her to pursue Kathak and train in the Lucknow style under Guru Smt. Trisha Biswas ji.
Before establishing Kathak Kadam, Surekha volunteered as a choreographer for community and cultural programs, helping children prepare for performances and sharing her love of dance within the community.
Those experiences gradually developed into something larger: a desire to create a place where students could study Kathak with patience, structure and personal attention.
Today, Kathak Kadam welcomes children as well as adult students, including those beginning their Kathak journey for the first time.
Preserving Indian Classical Arts in Kansas City
For KCdesi, welcoming Kathak Kadam is also about something broader than welcoming another local business.
As Kansas City’s Indian and South Asian community continues to grow, organizations that teach Indian music, dance, languages and cultural traditions play an important role in keeping those connections alive.
For children growing up here, learning an art form such as Kathak can become a bridge to India’s history, storytelling, music and cultural traditions.
For adults, it can provide an opportunity to reconnect with an art form they may have admired for years—or finally begin learning something they never had the opportunity to pursue earlier.
