If Kansas City’s memorials speak to its history, its public art energizes the present with bold creativity and imagination. Wander the grounds of the Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art and you’ll find giant shuttlecocks—yes, badminton birdies—scattered across the lawn. These playful Shuttlecocks have become one of the most photographed spots in the city, and for good reason. Their unexpected scale and whimsical placement turn the museum’s stately architecture into a delightful, memorable experience. In Penn Valley Park, another symbol quietly watches over the city—The Scout, a bronze statue of a Native American on horseback.
